Ambitious Reforestation Campaign Launches in Oddar Meanchey Province

PHNOM PENH, July 26, 2024 — A major environmental initiative kicked off in the Sangkum Rukhavorn Wildlife Sanctuary in Oddar Meanchey Province, where 15,000 saplings were planted to bolster Cambodia's forest cover. The event, held on July 25, 2024, was attended by the Minister of Environment, Dr. Eang Sophalleth, along with Oddar Meanchey Governor, Mean Chanyada, various provincial officials, members of the armed forces, and community participants including youth, students, and monks.

Dr. Sophalleth emphasized that the planting event is part of a broader effort to cultivate a 'green shoots' mindset among Cambodians, aimed at preserving and enhancing the nation’s natural resources for future generations. He underscored the significance of reforestation in enhancing biodiversity, supporting sustainable tourism, and fortifying livelihoods while preventing resource degradation.

The Minister expressed his appreciation for the ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship demonstrated by local authorities, the armed forces, park rangers, and citizens. He stressed the necessity of full law enforcement against environmental violations to ensure the enduring protection and conservation of protected areas.

Governor Chanyada affirmed the province’s dedication to the national 'Environmental Chakra Strategy', which aims for a clean, green, and sustainable environment. This strategy is aligned with Cambodia’s vision to become a carbon-neutral country with 60% forest cover by 2050.

The event also highlighted initiatives such as reducing plastic use and increasing green cover as integral to fostering a clean and sustainable community for future generations.
